Houston to Welcome Olympic Medalist

Canadian Olympic medalist Ryan Cochrane will be visiting Houston on April 4th as part of the GamesTown 2010 celebrations. Shown in the photo is (L-R) Silver medalist Grant Hackett of Australia, gold medalist Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia and bronze medalist Ryan Cochrane of Canada standing on the podium with their medals in the Men’s 1500m Freestyle final of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Victoria’s Ryan Cochrane is the only Canadian to swim 1500 metres in under 15 minutes. Ryan spends some of his spare time visiting schools to talk to children about Olympic values and the importance of being active. Ryan is also a member of the ActNow BC Athlete Ambassador team that travels around B.C. Ryan will visit Houston to share his enthusiasm for an active and healthy lifestyle.

The GamesTown 2010 contest is all about engaging communities to participate in the excitement leading up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Participants in GamesTown 2010 have until October 31 to go online and submit photos, stories and videos to show why their community should be the winner. The “Gold Medal” Winner receives a cash award of $100,000 to be put towards upgrading a local sports or healthy living facility.
