BVCU Helps Francois Lake Southside Residents with Emergency Preparedness
Jan 02. 08
2007 was a year of improved emergency services for Southside Residents in the Lakes District. The October 2006 snowstorm showed residents of South Francois Lake that emergency services needed co-ordination and improvement. Over the past year, basic and emergency service providers have been developing an emergency plan to be activated in case of disaster or emergency.
One of the service gaps discovered was emergency food & shelter services.
The new emergency plan calls for the Grassy Plains School Gymnasium to provide shelter for displaced residents.
The plan also calls for an Emergency Supply Warehouse to house emergency food & water rations as well as bedding and other supplies.
The Southside Health & Wellness Centre stepped forward and committed to building a warehouse at its Grassy Plains location adjacent to both the Health Centre and elementary school.
The $40,000 project was 50% funded by the Health Centre and the balance by donations.
Bulkley Valley Credit Union was pleased to provide support for this project in the amount of $5,000.
Southside is an important part of our service area. said Lakes District BVCU branch manager Ron Hooper. Ranchers, Loggers, First Nations, Resort Operators and their families, while spread throughout the southside, always come together as a community, in times of need. Bulkley Valley Credit Union is dedicated to the communities we serve and this is another example of our commitment to the Lakes District..
Bulkley Valley Credit Union serves its over 14,000 Members from 4 branches located in Burns Lake, Houston, Smithers and New Hazelton.
