Wear Your Poppy Please

Nov 07. 11

.
We ask you to take two minutes to remember the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives in military service on 11AM on the 11th of November.

Why the poppy?
The association between the poppy and war dates back to the Napoleonic wars, when a writer saw a field of poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers. During the Battle of Ypres in 1915, Canadian Lt.-Col. John McCrae was inspired to write the poem In Flanders Fields on sighting the poppies growing beside a grave of a close friend who had died in battle. The poem was a great inspiration in adopting the poppy as the Flower of Remembrance in Canada, France, the U.S, Britain and Commonwealth countries.

The first poppies were distributed in Canada in 1921.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Celebrating International Credit Union Day

Oct 20. 11

From the International Co-operative Alliance: Values and Principles

Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. The co-operative principles are guidelines by which co-operatives put their values into practice.

First Principle: Voluntary and Open Membership
Co-operatives are voluntary organizations, open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.

Second Principle: Democratic Member Control
Co-operatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members, who actively participate in setting their policies and making decisions. Men and women serving as elected representatives are accountable to the membership. In primary co-operatives members have equal voting rights (one member, one vote) and co-operatives at other levels are also organized in a democratic manner.

Third Principle: Member Economic Participation
Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of their co-operative. At least part of that capital is usually the common property of the co-operative. Members usually receive limited compensation, if any, on capital subscribed as a condition of membership. Members allocate surpluses for any or all of the following purposes: developing their co-operative, possibly by setting up reserves, part of which at least would be indivisible; benefiting members in proportion to their transactions with the co-operative; and supporting other activities approved by the membership.

Fourth Principle: Autonomy and Independence
Co-operatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members. If they enter to agreements with other organizations, including governments, or raise capital from external sources, they do so on terms that ensure democratic control by their members and maintain their co-operative autonomy.

Fifth Principle: Education, Training and Information
Co-operatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-operatives. They inform the general public - particularly young people and opinion leaders - about the nature and benefits of co-operation.

Sixth Principle: Co-operation among Co-operatives
Co-operatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the co-operative movement by working together through local, national, regional and international structures.

Seventh Principle: Concern for Community
Co-operatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies approved by their members.

Happy Birthday to you - CANADA!

Jun 29. 11

Bulkley Valley Credit Union wishes Canada a very Happy Birthday!

All of the BVCU offices will be closed on Friday, July 1.

The July 1 holiday was established by statute in 1879, under the name, Dominion Day. About 100 years later in 1982, our July 1 holiday “Dominion Day” became “Canada Day”.

On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty’s loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1st.

Canada Day is THE DAY to gather in your own community and proudly celebrate all there is in common with your neighbours. It is an opportunity to celebrate our achievements and the shared values of our ancestors. The celebrations are voiced in nearly all of the languages of the world thanks to the contribution of “old and new” Canadians.

For the past 50 years, the government has arranged for funding for Canada Day celebrations. A highlight was Canada’s Centennial in 1967 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II attended the celebrations with Parliament Hill again being the backdrop for a large scale official ceremony. The format changed the following year with the addition of multicultural and professional concerts held on Parliament Hill including a nationally televised show.

A new formula was developed in 1980 when the federal government organization charged with planning Canada’s Birthday celebrations supported the development of community celebrations all across Canada. Grant funds were distributed to promote popular and amateur activities organized by volunteer groups in hundreds of local communities. In 1985, Canada Day Committees were established in each province and territory to plan, organize and coordinate the Canada Day celebrations locally and grants continue to be available.

Lakes District TRADE SHOW a success

Jun 08. 11

The Lakes District branch staff recently participated in the Burns Lake & District Chamber of Commerce Trade Show held May 27 & 28 in the Tom Forsythe Memorial Arena.  The local Trade Show is a bi-annual event and was considered a great success this year.  The BVCU booth was decked out with plenty of information and photos and was considered one of the “must see  booths” as we not only provided popcorn and mini cupcakes, we handed out many tradeshow goodies by way of our new “PLINKO” board game which proved to be a big hit too.

The “PLINKO” board was designed and built by staff member Carren Wilson and was a big draw to our booth. It was also was a good way to give out some tradeshow trinkets to those who stopped by. And we must admit, we enjoyed having the local banks’ employees coming to our booth, playing PLINKO and complimenting us on our efforts for this local event.

We will now have the “Plinko” game board available for use by other groups in the Community as we do with our tent and popcorn machine.  Stop by the branch for a visit and to get more information anytime.

It is RELAY weekend!!!

Jun 01. 11

Funds raised through Relay For Life support the Canadian Cancer Society’s mission to eradicate cancer and enhance the quality of life of Canadians living with cancer. This is done by funding research projects and by providing information services and support programs in communities across the country.

Pictured here is one of the Relay for Life representatives, Grant Harris, accepting the Sponsorship cheque from Smithers Branch Manager, Gregory Wacholtz, and staff members Tina Poohachof, Kristan Mayer, Tracey Stecko and Erin Hamhuis.

Happy Victoria Day

May 16. 11

Our staff, management and directors wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday weekend.

Branch hours are:
Regular hours on Friday, May 20
 Closed Saturday, May 21
 Closed Monday, May 23
Regular hours on Tuesday, May 24th to serve you.

For many, the Victoria Day weekend is the time to plant the garden, have a picnic or family bar-b-que, or maybe even venture out for the first camping trip of the year. No matter what your plans are, we hope you enjoy your weekend and get a chance to spend some of it with family and friends.

In Canada, the celebration of Victoria Day occurs every year on the Monday prior to May 25th. It is the official celebration in Canada of the birthdays of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. Victoria Day became a national holiday in Canada in 1901. Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and empress of India was born on May 24, 1819. She ascended the throne after the death of her uncle George IV in 1837 when she was only 18. She ruled until her death in 1901 when her son Edward the VII became king of England.

2011 Census

May 04. 11

The census is happening this month, and early in May, yellow census packages will be delivered to every dwelling in Canada. This provides information needed to complete the census online or on paper.

The information in the census is used to plan services such as schools, daycare, police services and fire protection. This information is kept secret, as Statistics Canada is required by law to protect the information you provide on your census questionnaire. Only Statistics Canada employees working directly with the census will ever see completed census forms. There is also a law in Canada that says you must answer the questions in the census.

This year, you will be able to complete the census questionnaire online. Each census package will have a Secure Acccess Code printed at the top of the enclosed letter or questionnaire, and this code is needed before you are able to start your online questionnaire.

If you have difficulties using the online questionnaire, call the Census Help Line at 1-877-777-2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. TTY users may call 1-866-753-7083.

In addition to the 2011 Census, some residents will be asked to participate in the new National Household Survey (NHS). The information collected in the NHS will provide data to plan and support family services, housing, roads and public transportation, and skills training for employment. The NHS will collect the same information that was collected by the 2006 Census long-form questionnaire. For information to be available for future planning and decision making, it is important that all residents who receive the NHS complete the questionnaire. T’was The Day Before Easter

By Tammy Fuller
Twas the day before Easter and all through the woods,
The bunnies were busy packing their goods.
The eggs were all colored so pretty and bright,
All things were “go” for the big , special night.

The baskets were waiting, all decorated with care,
In hopes that the Bunny soon would be there.
My little brother Sam was asleep in his bed,
While visions of Easter eggs rolled round his head.

And I in my pajamas with the cat on my lap,
I had just settled down for a quick little nap.
When outside the window I heard a great noise,
I sprang from my chair and jumped over some toys.

As quick as a flash to the window I flew,
I pulled up the shade and , OH, what a view.
The moon on the meadow cast a bright golden glow
And the wind blew the flowers to and then fro.

Then all of a sudden from out of nowhere,
Came some lively bunnies, hopping here, hopping there!
Leading the group with ears long and funny
Was a plump all-white rabbit…
That’s right…the EASTER BUNNY!

The bunnies hopped past, one, two , three, four,
The rabbit called out and then there were more.
“Come Peter! Come, Flopsy! Come, Benny! Come, Joe!
Now hop along! Hop along! Hop along! GO!”

So up on each doorstep the bunnies did hop,
With baskets of eggs. (Let’s hope they don’t drop)!
Just at that moment, on the porch down below,
Came the stomping of feet ‘Twas the rabbit I know!

As I stepped from my window I heard a loud sound.
Through the door came the rabbit with a leap and a bound.
He was furry and soft from his head to his feet.
To see him so close was really quite neat.

He was surrounded by eggs that had been carefully dyed.
Easter eggs galore he soon would hide.
His eyes were all twinkles, His nose was so pink,
And I can’t be too sure but I think he did wink.

He had a kind face and a big fluffy tail
That bobbed up and down like a boat with a sail.
A twitch of his nose and a flick of his ear
Was his way of saying “You’ve nothing to fear.”

He uttered no sound as he hopped all about,
Hiding the eggs and leaving no doubt,
That the Easter Bunny had come like he does every year…
Bringing baskets of happiness to children so dear.

The Mother Millie Fund is operated in conjunction with the Burns Lake Vet Clinic and funds raised go towards the spaying/neutering and other medical care of the stray animals that find their way to the clinic. The Northwest Animal Shelter continues to move closer to its goal of building an animal shelter to service the Bulkley Valley. NWASS is a local group of volunteers who are actively involved in promoting responsible pet ownership

Thank you Houston!!

Dec 14. 10

Food bank collections huge success at the Houston Branch.
Since November the Houston branch has been successful in raising over $1050 in food and monetary donations for their Food Bank Campaign.  It started with a simple idea of asking our member’s to donate a food item; in return, we would reimburse up to $10 of their monthly service charges as a thank you.  Many were very generous and simply donated items and money because of the cause.  The staff donated $100 from their staff fund and another $200 from proceeds they raised over the year from other fundraising events they sponsored.  As well, each staff donated $10 to a charity of their choice to attend the annual Bulkley Valley Credit Union Christmas Party.  Finally, we sold our very own collector stuffed animal, Wonder the Wolfe.  Today we presented the Salvation Army Food Bank with a cheque for $750 along with over $350 in nonperishable food items.  Thank you to our staff and our members for your generous support.  Merry Christmas and happy new year.

Tanya Amonson, Branch Manager

Heart of the Kispiox Valley

Oct 15. 10

BVCU Hazeltons’ Branch Manager, Tamia Hatler, along with Smithers director, Klaus Mueller, were two of many that attended the Heart of the Valley Fundraiser last Friday night at the Kispiox Valley Community Hall. The dinner and auction fundraising event was “A celebration of community & steelheading to raise funds for our beautiful hall renovation project” and was deemed a great success!

Three time World Champion Auctioneer and the voice of the Kispiox Valley Rodeo, Keith Dinwoodie, was on hand for the auction alongside the keynote speaker, Bob Clay from Riverwatch Rod Builder, and Executive Chef & Presenter, Ali Howard, also known as ‘The Skeena Swimmer’. Live music completed the entertainment for the night by the Beaumont Trio.

Tamia and Klaus took this opportunity to show BVCU’s support for the community hall project with a donation of $4,000 to help with the fundraising efforts of the many dedicated individuals who made the renovation project become a reality. Congratulations to the organizers and to the Kispiox community on their beautiful hall!

Tour de North

Sep 10. 10

Tour de North began last Friday, September 10, when the riders travelled from Prince George to Vanderhoof.  Monday morning, the crew was around the Lakeview Mall parking lot from 7:30 to 10:00 to enjoy the community breakfast being served up by the BVCU team! Stop by for a Pancake and Sausage breakfast for $5 that will be 100% donated to Cops for Cancer!

When the tour went through Smithers on Tuesday morning, the Bulkley Valley Credit Union crew was again sponsoring a Breakfast.  This was a community breakfast from 8:00 to 9:30 in the Credit Union Parking Lot with all proceeds being donated. There has been fantastic support offered by many businesses and organizations in town and a huge thank you goes out to: Tim Horton’s, Sausage Factory, Paul’s Bakery, Safeway, Extra Foods, Royal Canadian Legion #63, BV Fall Fair, and School District #54.
A $5 donation will get you a ham & egg sandwich, fruit salad, juice and a Tim’s coffee.

The tour’s next stop is a BBQ lunch at the BVCU New Hazelton branch on the Tuesday afternoon from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m.  Hamburgers and hotdogs will be sold to again help raise funds for cancer research. Please come out to one of these events to show your support for the riders and have a meal with friends, family members and/or co-workers.

All three fundraising events this week raised more than $3600 for this great cause. We want to thank everyone who came out to support the riders and their mission.

Every fall over a hundred members of law enforcement and emergency services cycle up to two weeks across four areas of British Columbia to support children with cancer and their families. Riders and their supporters fundraise through events and appearances in the summer and on tour in the fall. More than 60 caring communities, hundreds of businesses and schools welcome the tour and contribute to help improve the lives of children with cancer.

    Your Invitation

    Jun 17. 10

Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition is very excited to announce the GRAND OPENING of the 10,000 Salmon Exhibit this Friday afternoon at 4:00 at Bastion Park in Old Hazelton!
Last year 10,000 little paper salmon were sent out to students to be decorated so that they could be incorporated into a giant regional art project.  Communities across northwestern BC sent back an overwhelming response, about 60%!!!  This is the first time a project of this scale has taken place in the region. These beautiful artistic creations made by the youth from pre-school to grade 12 have been applied to 28 giant paper-mache salmon and will be on exhibit throughout the summer. The 10,000 Salmon Exhibit will continue until the end of October.

SWCC believe this project truly embodies the spirit of the Skeena swim and will help that spirit of celebration and connection continue in our watersheds.

Communities that participated in the project include:
New Hazelton, South Hazelton, Old Hazelton, Two Mile, Moricetown, Smithers, Houston, Skidegate, Masset, Charlotte City, Gingolx, New Aiyansh, Gitwinsilkw, Terrace, Port Edward, Prince Rupert, Gitsegukla, Kitwanga, Gitanyow, Kispiox, Stewart, Telegraph Creek, Iskut, Dease Lake, Nass Valley, Gitanmaax, Glen Vowell, Kitimat, Telkwa, and Greenville.

    All for GOOD reasons

    Jun 11. 10

Staff have been very busy fundraising for the Relay for Life Cancer Walk in Smithers, Houston and Burns Lake as well as the Big Bike Ride for the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Smithers and Houston.

Smithers staff raised a total of just over $5,000 for their two events in the last couple of weeks and that meant that Daniel Eichstadter had to be true to his word and shave his head with an audience of staff and BVCU members who were in the branch on Thursday afternoon.

Houston staff raised over $1,700 for the Big Bike event earlier this week and the total group on the BIKE raised over $2,500! Congratulations and THANK YOU to all staff who took part in these events.

June 2 is Clean Air Day

    May 30. 10

Celebrate Clean Air Day 2010 on Wednesday June 2!

As many staff as possible will find alternative transportation when coming to work on Wednesday. Please think about joining us!

The challenge of ensuring clean air can be met. Home energy improvements, tree planting programs, alternative transportation are just some of the choices that can be acted upon. In many cases, one action will reduce both air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. Some actions can even save you money! Actions taken now and continued over the long-term can make a difference.

Here are some simple ways you can reduce GHG emissions at home:

  • Use caulking and weather stripping to seal all leaks around doors, windows, and cracks where heat escapes from your home.
  • Insulate when you renovate.
  • Use a programmable thermostat.
  • Clean your furnace filter regularly.
  • Use low-flow showerheads and fix leaky or dripping faucets.
  • Get rid of that old fridge.
  • Use cold water whenever you can to improve your clothes washer’s efficiency.
  • Let dishes air-dry rather than using the dishwasher’s drying cycle.
  • Use energy-efficient lighting products.

  • BBQ and CARWASH in Houston on Friday

    May 28. 10

Join us this Friday in Houston for a Carwash and BBQ and help us raise money for the Relay for Life and Big Bike Ride!

Come out to have lunch and have your wheels washed AND support these two great events in our community.

    World’s Premier Spoken Word Performer

    May 19. 10

Proud to help bring Shane Koyczan to Smithers!

You might remember hearing Shane reciting the “Poem for Canada” at the 2010 Olympics Opening Ceremonies. Mr. Koyczan wrote “We Are More” and has performed it across the country, including in Vancouver for the world to hear in February of this year.

Bulkley Valley Credit Union, the Bulkley Valley Concert Association, and the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society were the sponsors that made it possible for Koyczan to visit the Smithers Secondary and the Bulkley Valley Christian School and perform his school presentation about his childhood journey from victim to bully this week. There was also a public performance at the Della Herman Theatre on May 18.

Bulkley Valley Credit Union is proud to sponsor the Arts in our communities and we sincerely hope the students enjoyed the performance and Shane enjoyed his visit to the beautiful Bulkley Valley!

    A Very Successful Fundraiser!

    May 17. 10

Congratulations to the organizers of the recent fundraiser Bar-B-Que that raised over $3000 to help a Smithers family with their current battle with cancer. Wren was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma cancer in December 2009. This two year old little girl has undergone chemotherapy and surgery recently to remove the tumour at BC Children’s Hospital and the next steps will involve more chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant and possibly radiation treatments.

The staff at Bulkley Valley Insurance Services in Smithers hosted the Bar-B-Que and found great support from their neighbouring businesses to help make the event a tremendous success! Thanks to The Sausage Factory, Paul’s Bakery, McBike, Bulkley Valley Wholesale, The Peak, The Interior News and Bulkley Valley Financial Services for donating goods and services to see that every penny raised went to Wren and her family. Bulkley Valley Credit Union was also proud to support the event.

Bulkley Valley Insurance Services will continue to accept donations to Wren (photo below) and her family in the coming weeks.

    Spring is HERE!!!
In the weeks to come, we will be celebrating the new season and the successes of 2009!  This little poem will give you some insight to our Spring Celebration:
    Roses are Red,
    Violets are Blue,
    the Envelopes are Green,
and they are coming to YOU!

A Message from your Board of Directors:

    April 2010

To Shareholders of Bulkley Valley Credit Union

A part of Bulkley Valley Credit Union’s commitment to its members is to return a portion of its profits each year.  We are pleased to report we had another successful year in 2009.  We have declared a dividend of 2.10% on the membership shares which were recently credited to your share account.  In addition, we are also distributing over $370,000 in patronage payments to our members.

Even though our staff truly enjoy serving you face-to-face, we have decided this year to save you the trip into your branch to cash your patronage voucher. We will be automatically depositing your patronage amount to your demand account during the month of April. If your payment includes a refund of loan, LOC, and/or mortgage interest, you will see two separate credits posted to your account to ensure there are no tax implications on the loan interest refund portion. Business and Organization members will be receiving a flat amount that represents a portion of the total patronage funds designated for those memberships.

Bulkley Valley Credit Union’s future success in based on your continued patronage and we will continue to work hard to earn your support each and every day. If you have any questions concerning this program, please do not hesitate to contact your local branch staff and they would be happy to answer them for you.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for being a member of Bulkley Valley Credit Union.

    Yours Truly

    Randy Brandvold
    Chairperson

    Celebrating EARTH DAY!

    Apr 22. 10

Celebrate Earth Day TODAY – April 22!
The most celebrated environmental event worldwide.

Over 6,000,000 Canadians will join the 1,000,000,000 people from over 170 countries today that are staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. Almost every school child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity. Earth Hour 2010

    Mar 22. 10

World organizers are hoping 1,000,000,000 people will turn out their lights for Earth Hour 2010 this Saturday, March 27!

Earth hour is dedicated to making a positive impact on climate change, no matter who you are or where you live. You can contribute by making an effort to turn off your lights and unplug your electronics in your home or at your office, or both! This is a global initiative by the World Wildlife Fund in which everyone around the world is asked to turn off their lights at 8:30 p.m. local time this Saturday evening. Thank you for doing your part.

The program all began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, Earth Hour is intended to bring together entire communities around the world to heighten awareness about climate change and to inspire consumers and businesses to take practical actions to reduce their own carbon footprints.

“Last year, more than 10 million Canadians participated in Earth Hour, and this year we hope even more people turn off their lights, and more importantly, use that hour to think about how they can make every hour Earth Hour,” said Gerald Butts, president and CEO of WWF Canada.

    Central Park Building receives funding

    Mar 04. 10

The home of the Smithers Art Gallery and the Bulkley Valley Museum has welcomed the recent attention from BVCU and the Town of Smithers!

The Central Park Building, one of Smithers’ few heritage buildings, has received some well-deserved attention in the form of energy-efficiency improvements. Federal Gas Tax grants administered by the Town of Smithers and the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako have been awarded to purchase and install a new boiler and to insulate the third floor ceiling and attic spaces. The Bulkley Valley Credit Union’s Community Support committee has also awarded $1000.00 towards improving insulation in the building.

The Central Park Building is home to the Smithers Art Gallery, the Bulkley Valley Museum, Creative Roots Performing Arts, and the Bulkley Valley Genealogical Society. It also provides space for many artists and musicians who share their expertise and talents to residents of the Valley. The recent support offered will ensure that the building continues to be an integral part of Smithers for many years to come.

    Go Canada Go!

    Feb 17. 10

When you watch the medal presentations for the Bobsleigh, Luge, and Skeleton at the Whistler Sliding Centre, think of the proud community of Houston and Dungate Community Forest who donated the Lodgepole Pine for the podium!

23 podiums were built from timber donated by communities, First Nations, and businesses from across the Province for the Olympics. The podiums are built from one of 18 different wood types.
“We asked British Columbians to donate wood for the podium construction and the response was overwhelming,” said Forests and Range Minister Pat Bell. “It is clear that our communities take great pride in their local forests and are eager to share the Spirit of 2010 with the rest of the world.”

We wish Cindy the very best and invite you to stop by to check out the costumes of 1987 Cindy, Quiche Cindy, Sleep in Cindy, Expecting Cindy, Golfing Cindy and more. Farmers Market continues to GROW!

    Jul 03. 09

The Bulkley Valley Farmers Market Association recently received funding from the Economic Development Committee to assist with market development and strategic planning.  The BVFMA has had steady and stable growth from the time of its inception.  During the past few years the growth rate has been rapid and this trend is expected to continue. The Association wants and needs to be prepared to accommodate both increased demand from consumers, as well as increased interest from vendors.  It must understand its full role in the community and must be part of developing and articulating this role.

With proper foresight and planning, the Bulkley Valley Farmers Market can continue to be managed professionally as well as become a stronger more visible community service organization – one that continues to contribute significantly to farm incomes and to the economy of all communities in the Bulkley Valley.

By supporting the Association for a strategic plan as well as 2009 market development expenses, BVCU will have the help create employment for resource people, increase BVFMA capacity which will allow more support to local farming and cottage-based industries, improve the function of the market, and strengthen, promote and expand community events.

Bulkley Valley Credit Union congratulates everyone involved in the Farmers Market and their success! To learn more about the Bulkley Valley Credit Union’s Economic Development Fund, please visit the Community Funding page of our website.

    Earth Day

    Apr 22. 09

Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22, 2009.

Earth Week in the Bulkley Valley is April 20 to 25 and it is a great time to help many others create an overall awareness about our environment and changing our habits and to make a positive impact on climate change. Everyone can do their part just by rethinking their consumption habits:

    - save water,
    - turn off unnecessary lights,
    - make the most of your programmable thermostat and lower the temperature when you can,
    - don’t just turn off those electronics that are not in use, unplug them,
    - replace the standard light bulbs in your home with energy-efficient ones,
    - double side all of your printed and photocopied jobs,
    - recycle your bottles, cans, cardboard, and plastic bags,
    - carpool, ride a bike, or walk to work.
    - PLANT A TREE!
    - PLANT A TREE!
    - PLANT A TREE!
Bulkley Valley Credit Union is proud to announce that it has partnered with Wet’suwet’en Nation and Woodmere Nursery and developed a carbon sequestration project this year where 2000 fast growing Spruce seedlings will be planted in Wet’suwet’en lands as a restoration. Woodmere Nursery has donated the seedlings for the project and Bulkley Valley Credit Union will provide the planting costs.

    Earth Hour 2009

    Mar 28. 09

Earth Hour 2009 is this Saturday, March 28! The hour is dedicated to making a positive impact on climate change, no matter who you are or where you live. You can contribute by making an effort to turn off your lights, unplug your electronics, and even consider using the hour to replace the standard light bulbs in your home with energy-efficient ones. What about going for a walk or playing a card/board game by candlelight from 8 pm to 9 pm this Saturday! Thank you for doing your part.

Building off the program that was piloted in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, Earth Hour is intended to bring together entire communities around the world to heighten awareness about climate change and to inspire consumers and businesses to take practical actions to reduce their own carbon footprints.

    - Cities around the world will join together in literally turning off the lights for one hour to offer leadership and symbolize their commitment to finding climate change solutions.

    - Lights will be turned off at iconic buildings and national landmarks from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

    - Local businesses and restaurants will also be asked to turn off their lights.

“This is the perfect opportunity for individuals, governments, businesses and communities around the world to unite for a common purpose, in response to a global issue that affect us all.” Carter S. Roberts, President and CEO WWF

MUCH NEEDED DOUGH FOR THE HAZELTONS!

    Mar 06. 09

    .
The BVCU Economic Development Committee recently donated $10,000 towards the start-up of the Skeena Bakery Project.

Skeena Bakery will bake craft style and daily breads as well as savoury and sweet treats. But that is not all it will do…

The retail storefront will include a small seating area for on-site consumption of bakery purchases. Fresh brewed coffee and tea will be sold as part of the retail counter service. As part of its social mission, the Society will hire people with mental, developmental and physical disabilities to work or volunteer in the bakery. Workers will be trained in traditional (non-mechanized) baking skills, with the possibility of suitable candidates obtaining a “Red Seal” baking apprenticeship.

The BVCU Economic Development Fund previously supported the project with $2000 that funded the development of a business plan for the venture. We wish the Skeena Bakery every success imaginable!

    Camp Kikatee 2009

    Mar 03. 09

The Community Support Committee is very happy to help the Smithers Wolf Cubs with their continuing fund raising efforts that are needed to host Camp Kikatee 2009.  This is a two night camping event that will take place in May, and it is expected that 100 cubs, leaders and parents from Smithers to Prince Rupert will attend.  The Scouts Mission is to contribute to the development of youth to “build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.”

Bulkley Valley Credit Union is committed to supporting our local communities. One way we do this is through our Community Support Fund. The fund was developed to support clubs and not-for-profit groups throughout our service areas and focuses on Youth, Community and Education. To request a donation, download the form from our Community Funding webpage or stop by your local branch.
