Economic Development Funds awarded in 2009

In 2004, Bulkley Valley Credit Union created an Economic Development Fund. These moneys are distributed through our four Economic Development Committees based in each of our branches. The purpose of the committees is to foster development in all of the communities that Bulkley Valley Credit Union serves. Committee members review written requests for funding for specific economic development projects from local community groups, businesses, and individuals.

One of the local projects that had benefited from the Economic Development Fund in 2009 was the Bulkley Valley Economic Development Initiative to assist with the hiring of a consultant to coordinate the start-up of the office and with the advertising costs of the proposed public meetings. Others who received funding in 2009 were Plan B Brewing to assist with start up costs, the Bulkley Valley Farmers’ Market Association to assist with market development and strategic planning; Smithers Community Services Association (Volunteer Smithers) to present a series of workshops for non-profit organizations; Camp Caledonia’s renovation project; the Houston Recreation Centre to assist with the renovation costs; the Burns Lake Farmers Market group to help with promotional costs;NWCC’s Wilderness Guiding and Wrangling Program; Great Bear Coast, Field and Forest Cooperative to assist with mapping and marketing material costs; the Pleasant Valley Community Market to help with the cost of advertising; and the Skeena Bakery in the Hazeltons to help with the costs to develop a comprehensive business plan.
