Food and Friendship are the Mandate at the Community Soup Kitchen
Dec 14. 06
The Smithers Community Support Committee is very pleased to donate $554.00 to the St. James Community Soup Kitchen, which operates out of the St. James Anglican Church. Flora Stokes (in picture) has been the driving force behind the soup kitchen for the past 10 years as the service has grown and in both size and need. The Soup Kitchen operates every Saturday from 10:45 1:00 and has a dedicated volunteer staff of 70. The kitchen will be having some much-needed upgrades in the near future with new stainless steel counter tops and new sinks just to keep up to the demands of the soup-makers!The soup kitchen is run all year round, and on an average Saturday during the winter months, between 150 and 200 bowls of soup are dished out! Between their volunteers and helpful community groups, such as the Youth Volunteer Corps, the kitchen keeps up with the demand.
Flora Stokes has stepped back from her duties at the soup kitchen, and we all wish her the best in her semi-retirement!!
