Mandatory Mask Requirement

Nov 23. 20

Bulkley Valley Credit Union (BVCU), Bulkley Valley Financial Services (BVFS), and Bulkley Valley Insurance Services (BVIS) take the health and safety of our staff, members, and the community very seriously.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have actively followed provincial guidelines to ensure a healthy and safe experience for everyone in our buildings. This includes the mandatory mask requirement that came into effect on November 20 across British Columbia. This new restriction states that masks must be worn in all indoor public settings. Members who do not comply can be refused entry or service.

A video has surfaced on social media of an individual entering the BVCU branch in Smithers that we feel we need to address.

On Friday, November 20, an individual entered the BVCU branch in Smithers without a mask. Staff kindly asked the person to put on a mask, or he would have to leave. The individual refused and continued to record the discussion. After several attempts to ask the individual to leave, staff called the RCMP.  Officers arrived and attended to the matter.

“We are in a difficult time and while wearing a mask may seem obtrusive at times, we need to do our part to help safeguard the health and safety of staff, members, and the community,” says Jana Lukasek, CEO of the Bulkley Valley Credit Union.  “I am proud of how our staff continue to adapt to this challenging health crisis and the changing health requirements we need to work within, in order to operate in a safe manner. I am proud of how they handled this situation, and thankful for the assistance of the RCMP.”

BVCU and its subsidiaries are committed to protecting the health and well-being of our staff, members, and community by following the regulations and protocols set out by health professionals at all levels of government.

We continue to take measures to ensure our branches and offices are safe with enhanced cleaning protocols and hand sanitizer for both employees and members. In addition to mandatory masks, we also ask everyone to practice social distancing in our branches and offices. BVCU also continues to offer increased remote services to provide alternative options for our customers.
